Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), an organisation banned in India, has announced a Khalistan referendum event in Edmonton, Alberta, on October 18. The group describes the event as part of a non-binding campaign among Sikh communities in different countries.
The announcement comes as India and Canada seek to rebuild ties through cooperation in trade, energy, technology and security. The two governments are also pursuing talks on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. A Canadian business delegation of nearly 300 members is visiting India from October 12 to 17.
SFJ has linked its Edmonton event to wider debate about Alberta’s political future. The group’s event and the separate debate over Alberta’s status are distinct matters.
