Russian President Vladimir Putin said sport can help unite the world during periods of change by promoting equality, justice, mutual respect and solidarity.
In a message to participants and guests of the International Sports Forum “Russia: Country of Sports,” held in Krasnoyarsk on October 23, Putin said taking part in sports helps people develop responsibility and discipline. These qualities, he said, help people focus on their goals and succeed in their personal lives and in serving their people and country.
Putin said this was why the forum’s agenda placed importance on children’s and youth sports and encouraging physical activity among young people. This year’s forum is themed “Sport: Uniting the World in Times of Change.”
He said periods of transformation require a solid foundation, and sport can strengthen shared human values. Putin said Russia would remain an important part of the international sports community and reaffirmed its commitment to the international obligations and requirements it has accepted.
Russia is open to dialogue and cooperation, he said, and supports preserving sports traditions and the fundamental principles of international sports law while advancing development.
Putin described the future of sport as making it more accessible, introducing innovative technology in training and competitions, and improving sports medicine, athlete development programmes and education. He also welcomed new sports disciplines, saying they should support personal development and promote healthy lifestyles.
