Russia accuses NATO activities of worsening European security

Russia has accused NATO activities and Western policies of worsening the security situation in Europe year after year. Natalia Fuzhenkova, deputy head of the Russian delegation, made the remarks during a discussion on regional disarmament and security at the First Committee of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Speaking in New York on October 23, Fuzhenkova said international relations were undergoing unprecedented changes. She argued that disregard for international law, failure to consider other states’ core interests and attempts to secure military superiority were creating a new security environment.
She said the expansion of military alliances and the formation of new ones were violating the principle of indivisible security. Russia had repeatedly proposed cooperation on arms control and confidence- and security-building measures, but Western representatives had not responded, she added.
According to Fuzhenkova, Russia’s proposals aimed to prevent confrontation, reduce tensions and avert dangerous military activity and incidents, including at sea and in the air. She accused Western countries of promoting what she described as unrealistic concepts of a “rules-based world order” and risk and crisis management.
Fuzhenkova blamed the deteriorating European security situation on the previous US administration and its NATO allies, accusing them of pursuing open confrontation with Russia and dismantling arms-control and confidence-building frameworks. She said Western leaders’ policies were undermining the foundations of European security.
She also alleged that NATO intelligence activity near Russia’s borders had increased, that provocative military exercises had multiplied and that Western strategic documents portrayed Russia as an enemy. She further claimed that NATO specialists were providing intelligence to Ukraine and taking part in planning strikes inside Russian territory.
Fuzhenkova expressed concern over discussion in Europe about preparing for a full-scale war with Russia by 2030. The statement did not include responses from NATO or Western governments to the allegations.
