China’s top political adviser Wang Huning accompanied North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on a visit to Dandong, a border city in China’s northeastern Liaoning Province, on Saturday. Kim crossed the newly opened Yalu River Bridge to reach the city.
During the visit, Kim and Wang laid a flower basket at a memorial commemorating China’s resistance to US aggression and its support for Korea. They viewed historical exhibits at the memorial hall. Kim also presented the hall with an inscribed historical photograph depicting Chinese and North Korean soldiers fighting together, Xinhua reported.
Wang conveyed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s greetings to Kim and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to advancing friendship and cooperation between the two countries. He said the new Yalu River Bridge could help expand people-to-people exchanges and trade.
The visit coincided with the 76th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Volunteers entering the Korean War. China said Kim’s trip underscored the historical ties between the two countries. The bridge’s opening has also raised expectations of increased cross-border travel and trade.
