China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a ceremony on Saturday to mark the completion of renovation work at cemeteries for Chinese People’s Volunteer soldiers who fought in the Korean War. The ceremony took place in Sinphyong County, North Hwanghae Province, DPRK.

Held ahead of the 76th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Volunteers’ entry into the DPRK, the ceremony included the laying of flower baskets, a moment of silence and visits to the graves and a memorial wall bearing the names of the fallen.

Qi Han, chargé d’affaires ad interim at the Chinese Embassy in the DPRK, said the two countries’ traditional friendship had been forged through shared sacrifices during the war. China was ready to work with the DPRK to implement agreements between their leaders, preserve the memorials, strengthen strategic coordination and support regional peace, he said.

Hong Zongming, vice minister of China’s Ministry of Veterans Affairs, described the memorial sites as important places for honoring the fallen and passing on the spirit of China-DPRK friendship.

China’s Ministry of National Defense said joint renovation work at five cemeteries—in Sinphyong, Wonsan, Munchon, Chonnae and Sepo—was completed between April and October. The Sinphyong cemetery contains a mass grave for 343 soldiers. Renovations added a memorial entrance, a commemorative square and a wall inscribed with the names of the fallen.
