Russian Ambassador to Thailand Evgeny Tomikhin says Moscow and Bangkok are continuing discussions on energy security and broader economic cooperation.

Speaking to RT on the sidelines of the Second Russia–Thailand Investment Forum 2026, Tomikhin said energy security had long been part of bilateral dialogue, even before recent geopolitical disruptions. He said discussions involving energy ministries and companies were continuing in various formats.

Thailand is interested in expanding energy cooperation with Russia, the ambassador said, adding that Moscow is open to discussions and collaboration. Relevant companies have already established contacts, he noted.

Tomikhin said his estimate that bilateral trade could reach US$10–15 billion was based on assessments by Russia’s business community. Russian businesses see strong potential for growth if the obstacles to trade are addressed, he said.

He also highlighted Thailand’s interest in a proposed free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Thailand has studied the potential benefits such an agreement could bring to its economy, according to Tomikhin.

Because the agreement would require consensus among EAEU members, he said, Russia’s position was positive and constructive. He added that Moscow had encouraged Thailand to discuss the proposal with the other members of the union.
