Shooting at White House Correspondents’ Dinner: President Trump Safe, Shooter Apprehended

Washington D.C. — Gunfire broke outside the White House Correspondents’ Association annual dinner held at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Saturday evening. President Donald Trump was safely evacuated from the venue following the incident.
Secret Service agents immediately escorted President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump from the event. Trump later wrote on his social media platform Truth Social: “The First Lady, the Vice President, and all Cabinet members are safe. We will hold a news conference from the White House shortly.”
According to eyewitnesses, the sound of gunshots was heard outside the ballroom. Chris Sheridan, a producer for Al Jazeera, said, “We heard about five rounds fired. We smelled gunpowder. We immediately hit the ground.” Attendees were seen ducking under tables for cover, with visuals of the scene broadcast live.
The US Secret Service confirmed that the shooting occurred in a “screening area” and that one individual has been taken into custody. The condition of the attacker and further details of the incident have not yet been released. Trump praised the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies, stating, “They acted quickly and bravely.”
This marks the second time President Trump has been the target of an attack. Previously, during a campaign rally in 2024, he was injured in his right ear in a shooting incident. Heavy security has been deployed around the hotel following the incident.
