Swiss Airlines Flight Engine Catches Fire at Delhi Airport; Passengers Safely Evacuated

New Delhi — A Swiss International Airlines flight had to abandon takeoff after one of its engines caught fire on a runway at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours of Sunday, injuring at least six passengers. The airport authority said all passengers were immediately evacuated.
The Delhi-Zurich flight (LX 147) was carrying 228 passengers and 4 infants, a total of 232 people on board. The injured passengers were later admitted to a local private hospital. A full emergency was declared at Delhi Airport following the incident.
The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330 (HB-JHK), according to Swiss Airlines. The airline has established a task force. The crew rejected the takeoff and, following an assessment of the situation, decided as a precaution to evacuate the aircraft.
