China’s Clear Disagreement on Hormuz Crisis: Will Not Back US-Led Military Operation, Urges Dialogue for Resolution

Beijing — China has made it clear that it will not side with the US-led military operation in the Strait of Hormuz crisis. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated at a regular press briefing on Wednesday, “China’s position on the situation of the Strait of Hormuz is quite clear. The Chinese side will continue to make efforts to promote the de-escalation of the situation and safeguard the safety and security of Chinese ships and crews.”

Lin made the remarks in response to a question regarding some US officials’ comments that China should support the US-led military operation in the Strait of Hormuz. He said China hopes all relevant parties will act prudently, avoid escalating the situation, and resolve disputes through dialogue, so as to restore peace and tranquility in the strait as soon as possible. Russia and Qatar also recently held a telephone conversation on the Hormuz crisis, during which both sides called for the abandonment of the use of force. China’s stance likewise reaffirms its commitment to a diplomatic resolution.
