Afghan security forces have foiled an arms-smuggling attempt and seized 24 assault rifles of various types in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
According to a statement issued by the Nangarhar provincial government on Sunday, the weapons were being smuggled into Afghanistan from a neighbouring country.
Security personnel discovered the rifles while inspecting a vehicle at the Torkham border crossing. The weapons had been concealed inside a vehicle transporting Afghan returnees.
Officials did not provide details on whether anyone was arrested in connection with the incident.
The operation was carried out as part of the Afghan government’s broader campaign to collect unauthorised weapons and ammunition held by individuals and groups outside the official security forces.
The government has also intensified efforts to curb arms smuggling by strengthening the deployment of security personnel along border areas.
