Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani have held a telephone conversation on the expansion of Russia–Qatar relations and the continuing tensions in the Persian Gulf.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two sides held detailed discussions on August 4 on key areas for the further development of the traditionally friendly relationship between Russia and Qatar.
They reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular and trust-based political dialogue and expanding cooperation in trade, the economy, investment, culture and humanitarian affairs.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East, with particular attention to the continuing escalation in the Persian Gulf.
Lavrov and Al Thani stressed the importance of immediately ending hostilities and promptly resuming negotiations on the basis of the Islamabad Memorandum signed on June 17.
The two sides indicated that the continuation of military tensions could create further risks to security and stability in the Middle East and emphasised the need to reactivate political and diplomatic processes.
The telephone conversation reaffirmed the shared commitment of Moscow and Doha to prioritising dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the regional crisis while simultaneously strengthening bilateral political and economic relations.
