Russia marked 30 years on Wednesday since the approval of the official symbols of presidential authority used during the inauguration of a newly elected head of state.

According to the Office of the President of Russia, the Presidential Standard and the Presidential Emblem were approved as official symbols of authority on August 5, 1996.

The Presidential Standard features Russia’s tricolour flag with a golden image of the State Emblem in the centre. During an inauguration ceremony, the Standard is formally presented to the newly elected president.

After the president takes the oath of office, the Standard is placed in the presidential office. Duplicates are flown over presidential residences whenever the head of state is present and are also displayed on presidential vehicles.

The Presidential Emblem is a unique insignia that exists in a single original copy. It takes the form of an equal-armed cross with flared ends and bears the Russian State Emblem at its centre.

A medallion on the reverse carries the motto, “Benefit, Honour and Glory.”

The chain of the insignia consists of 17 links, nine of which display the Russian State Emblem.

Plates on the reverse of the links are engraved with the full name of each Russian president and the year in which they assumed office.

After the president takes the oath of office, the Presidential Emblem is kept at the presidential residence in the Moscow Kremlin.
