Dragon Media News Desk

A Chinese fishing vessel, YuanYu 708, has rescued five Sierra Leonean fishermen after their boat sank in rough seas.

According to local media reports, Captain Wang Pingchao of YuanYu 708 spotted distress signals from a sinking local fishing boat while conducting a routine watch amid heavy rain and strong waves on Tuesday. He immediately ordered the vessel to proceed at full speed towards the scene.

By the time YuanYu 708 arrived, the fishing boat had already sunk, leaving the five fishermen struggling in the water without adequate life-saving equipment. They faced serious risks of hypothermia and drowning.

The Chinese vessel immediately activated its emergency response procedures and informed the company’s management about the incident. A support vessel, Chang Rong-3, carrying medical personnel, was subsequently dispatched to assist in the operation.

The crew of YuanYu 708 quickly launched a rescue operation and successfully brought all five fishermen safely aboard the vessel.

Following their rescue, the survivors were provided with dry clothing, food, drinking water, basic medical treatment and emotional support.

Representatives of the Sierra Leone Navy and local authorities later visited the vessel and praised the Chinese crew for their professionalism, courage and humanitarian action.

Local media described the operation as a timely and effective rescue carried out under difficult weather conditions.
