Dragon Media News Desk

India is accelerating efforts to connect its film industry with the wider global creative economy while simultaneously strengthening legal and technological enforcement against film piracy.

According to India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, more than 500 delegates from BRICS member and partner countries gathered in Mumbai for the BRICS WAVES Bazaar beginning August 6. Participants include government representatives, producers, investors, broadcasters, OTT platforms, technology companies, startups and cultural institutions.

Representatives from 21 countries are involved, with discussions focusing on international co-production, content financing, intellectual property, digital transformation, market access and South-South cooperation.

India is also developing WAVES Bazaar as a year-round international marketplace for creative industries. WaveX is intended to connect media and entertainment startups with investors and incubators, while the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies is strengthening skills and innovation in animation, visual effects, gaming, comics and extended reality.

At the same time, the government has intensified action against online film piracy. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said intermediaries have been directed to disable access to 7,393 online locations linked to pirated films, including 4,996 Telegram channels and 1,263 websites.

Taken together, these initiatives suggest that India is increasingly approaching cinema not simply as an entertainment business but as part of a wider creative economy encompassing production, technology, intellectual property, international cooperation and global market development.
