Putin and UAE President Al Nahyan Discuss Persian Gulf Situation and Ukraine by Phone

Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the United Arab Emirates Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a telephone conversation on August 7.

According to the Kremlin, the two leaders held an in-depth discussion on the latest situation in the Persian Gulf region. They stressed the importance of reaching agreements at the earliest opportunity to normalize the situation while taking into account the legitimate interests of regional states.

The two leaders also exchanged views on Ukraine. President Putin briefed the UAE President on recent developments related to what Russia describes as its “special military operation.”

According to the Russian side, Putin drew particular attention to what Moscow described as intensified attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Russia also expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership for its assistance in facilitating exchanges of prisoners of war and detained persons between Russia and Ukraine.

The UAE has in recent years played a mediating role in prisoner exchanges and other humanitarian matters involving Russia and Ukraine.

The Kremlin described the conversation as constructive and friendly, saying it reaffirmed the shared commitment of both sides to further developing multifaceted cooperation between Russia and the UAE.

Russia and the UAE have continued to expand cooperation in energy, trade, investment, diplomacy and regional affairs. The latest conversation underscored the two countries’ intention to maintain high-level dialogue on bilateral relations as well as major regional and international issues, including security in the Gulf and the conflict in Ukraine.
