Strong Legal Protection Sought for Drivers and Conductors

Saroj Sitaula, President of the Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, has called on the government to introduce strong legal provisions to protect drivers and conductors from assault and mistreatment following road accidents or other incidents.

Speaking at the inauguration of the seventh annual general meeting of Tarakeshwar Transport Pvt. Ltd. in Kathmandu on Saturday, Sitaula said drivers and conductors should receive legal protection comparable to that provided to police and traffic personnel while carrying out their duties.

He noted that road accidents are subject to established procedures for investigation and legal action, and stressed that drivers and conductors should not be physically attacked or assaulted immediately after an incident.

Sitaula also said transport operators have long been providing concessions and support to students, visually impaired people, persons with disabilities, women and senior citizens.

He urged the government to immediately implement its commitment regarding the 60 percent concession amount or the related policy intended to compensate transport operators.

Sitaula also called on transport operators and conductors to treat passengers respectfully and provide high-quality services.

He stressed that transport workers and operators must avoid mistreating passengers and remain committed to providing safe, reliable and responsible public transport services.
