Rain and Landslides Block Roads Across Nepal, Nighttime Traffic Restricted on Some Routes

Heavy rain, landslides, road subsidence and erosion have disrupted highways and road sections in different parts of Nepal.

According to an update issued by Nepal Police Headquarters as of 5:45 am on Sunday, traffic has been affected along the Mid Hill Highway in Terhathum, the Arniko Highway in Sindhupalchok, the Mechi Highway in Ilam, the Trishuli Mailung Syafrubesi road in Rasuwa, and the Bheri Corridor in Rukum West, among other routes.

On the BP Highway linking Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli, all types of vehicles have been prohibited from operating along the Khurkot, Nepalthok and Katunjebesi section from 6 pm to 4 am because of the risk of possible flooding.

Vehicles are allowed to operate on the section from 4 am to 6 pm.

Similarly, all types of vehicles have been restricted from using the Kanti Highway in Makwanpur from 5 pm to 5 am because of heightened risks during the monsoon season.

The Mechi Highway at Rajduwali in Ilam Municipality Ward 9 has been completely blocked after heavy rain left the road muddy and impassable. Police said an alternative route is available in the area.

Several sections of the Arniko Highway in Sindhupalchok have also been completely blocked by landslides and road subsidence in Jirokilo of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality Ward 4 and in Kodari and Liping of Ward 2.

Police said a landslide occurred at Jirokilo, while the road subsided in the Liping area.

The Arniko Highway has also been blocked at Dumre in Chautara Sangachokgadhi Municipality Ward 9.

In Rasuwa, erosion at Khalte in Uttargaya Rural Municipality Ward 5 has completely blocked the Trishuli Mailung Syafrubesi road.

The Jajarkot Dolpa section of the Bheri Corridor at Rijegard Khola in Aathbiskot Municipality Ward 6 of Rukum West has also been completely obstructed by a landslide.

Likewise, the Mid Hill Highway near Pingwa Khola at Kade in Laligurans Municipality Ward 9 of Terhathum has been completely blocked following a landslide.

Police have urged travelers to check the latest road conditions with the relevant authorities before beginning their journeys, as the risk of landslides, floods, erosion and road subsidence remains high during the monsoon season.
