Nepali Congress lawmaker Renuka Kaucha has told Prime Minister Balendra Shah that the opposition stands ready to support every step he takes in the national interest, urging him not to consider himself alone.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, Kaucha referred to Prime Minister Shah’s social media remarks on Friday in which he had spoken about having to fight alone at times.

She questioned why the Prime Minister had reached a point where he felt isolated even when lawmakers from the ruling side were attempting to hold the government accountable.

“How did a situation arise in which the Prime Minister feels alone when even lawmakers from the ruling side are trying to caution the government? Why has the Prime Minister been compelled to fight alone? This can be interpreted in various ways,” she said.

Referring to Prime Minister Shah’s dark glasses, Kaucha added, “Take off the dark glasses. You are not alone. The opposition stands with you in every appropriate step you take in the interest of the country.”

She made clear, however, that the opposition could not remain silent if the government acted in ways that weakened established procedures, democratic values and parliamentary practices.

Kaucha also raised the issue of an earlier statement by Prime Minister Shah concerning the Nepal–India border. She expressed disappointment that he had not corrected remarks suggesting that Nepal had also encroached upon Indian territory.

Noting that the Prime Minister represents not only the ruling side but the country as a whole, Kaucha urged Shah to respond to questions raised by the opposition.
