Journalist Kishor Shrestha Arrested, Investigation Underway Over Alleged Privacy Offence

Police arrested senior journalist and Jana Aastha Weekly editor Kishor Shrestha on Wednesday evening.

Shrestha was taken into custody from his residence in Lalitpur. A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and the District Police Range, Kathmandu, had been deployed for the arrest, according to a senior police source.

Police said Shrestha was arrested for investigation over an alleged offence under the Privacy Act, 2018. The law contains provisions concerning the protection of personal information, correspondence and private data held through electronic means.

Police have not yet publicly disclosed the detailed contents of the complaint, the specific basis of the allegation against Shrestha or the next steps in the investigation.

Shrestha has been active in journalism for many years and serves as editor of Jana Aastha Weekly. His reporting and commentary on public and political affairs have frequently drawn attention.
