Sher Bahadur Deuba Returning Home Today After Long Stay Abroad

Former Prime Minister and former Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba is returning to Nepal today, Thursday, after a prolonged stay abroad.

Deuba had been staying in Singapore and Hong Kong for medical treatment and regular follow-up care. In the latest phase of his journey, he travelled from Hong Kong to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, and is scheduled to fly to Kathmandu from there.

His return has drawn particular attention amid recent political developments within the Nepali Congress. A faction aligned with Deuba is preparing to hold a national gathering in Kathmandu, while internal disputes over the party’s leadership and official legitimacy remain unresolved.

Political activity within the Nepali Congress has intensified after the Supreme Court allowed a review petition concerning the dispute over the party’s official status. Against this backdrop, Deuba’s return is being closely watched for its possible impact on the party’s internal balance of power and future political course.

During the Gen Z movement on Bhadra 24 last year, Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha was set on fire, while Deuba and his wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, were also physically attacked. After receiving initial treatment in Nepal, the couple travelled abroad for further medical care.

Deuba has remained largely away from active political affairs during his extended stay abroad. His return therefore comes at a politically significant moment for the Nepali Congress, with competing factions intensifying their activities and the party facing important organisational and legal questions.
