China’s Summer Box Office Surpasses 9.2 Billion Yuan as Cinema Admissions Exceed 250 Million

China’s 2026 summer film season has gathered strong momentum, with box-office revenue exceeding 9.2 billion yuan, including advance sales, by August 13 and cinema admissions surpassing 250 million.

The market has also recorded 34 consecutive days in which daily box-office revenue exceeded 100 million yuan, while the total number of screenings during the summer season has risen above 32.2 million.

The strength of this year’s market is not being driven by a single genre. More than 120 Chinese and international films are scheduled across the summer period, spanning comedy, animation, family entertainment, science fiction, war-related stories and social drama.

Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Soccer” has emerged as the leading film of the summer season, generating more than 2.27 billion yuan. The Chinese animated feature “All Wishes Come True,” drawing on traditional mythology, has become another major domestic success with around 1.5 billion yuan in theatrical revenue.

International films have also retained a significant position in the market. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” ranks among the three highest-grossing films of the season, illustrating that China remains an important theatrical market for foreign productions even as domestic films continue to strengthen their competitive position.

Lower ticket prices have contributed to the expansion in attendance. China’s average cinema ticket price during the 2026 summer season has fallen to 39.6 yuan, 4.3 yuan lower than during the corresponding period last year.

China is also advancing 2026 as a year for promoting the film economy, with plans for at least 1.2 billion yuan in cinema-consumption incentives and ticket subsidies nationwide. Local programmes in Beijing and other cities have sought to reduce the cost of cinema attendance and stimulate wider film-related consumption.

Animation has remained another important source of market growth. By late July, animated films had generated more than 1.5 billion yuan during the summer season, with domestically produced Chinese animation accounting for over 62 percent of that revenue.

The performance reflects the increasing ability of Chinese filmmakers to combine traditional mythology, cultural characters and contemporary animation technology, while several productions are also expanding into international theatrical distribution.

China’s total 2026 box office had surpassed 24.9 billion yuan by August 13. With the summer film season continuing through August 31, the final figure for the period is expected to rise further.

The results so far reveal two important features of the contemporary Chinese film market. Audiences are returning to cinemas in substantial numbers, while the combination of culturally distinctive domestic productions and major international releases is creating an increasingly diverse and competitive theatrical environment.
