Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa are scheduled to hold bilateral talks in Moscow on Monday.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Ablakwa will be in Russia on a working visit from August 16 to 19. The ministerial talks on August 17 are expected to focus on the current state of Russia-Ghana relations and prospects for expanding cooperation.
The two sides are expected to discuss practical steps to strengthen traditionally friendly ties, deepen political dialogue and increase bilateral contacts. Trade, economic cooperation, humanitarian exchanges and other areas of mutually beneficial partnership will also feature prominently on the agenda.
During the talks, the two countries plan to sign an agreement on visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic and official passports. The proposed arrangement is expected to facilitate official and diplomatic exchanges between Russia and Ghana.
Lavrov and Ablakwa are also expected to exchange views on international and regional issues, with particular attention to coordination within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
Russia has in recent years sought to expand political, economic, trade and humanitarian engagement with African countries. The talks with Ghana are expected to form part of Moscow’s broader effort to develop longer-term and more practical cooperation with its African partners.
Ablakwa’s four-day visit to Moscow is also expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to identify new areas of cooperation in trade, economic relations and multilateral diplomacy.
