Emraan Hashmi’s “Awarapan 2” has crossed the Rs 100 crore net mark at the Indian box office during its first week in theaters.

Released on August 14, the romantic action drama earned about Rs 113.5 crore net in India during its opening seven days, while its worldwide gross moved beyond Rs 160 crore.

The performance marks the first time an Emraan Hashmi-led film has crossed Rs 100 crore net in the domestic market.

The original “Awarapan,” released in 2007, was not a major commercial success during its initial theatrical run but gradually developed a strong following over the years. That long-term audience connection appears to have played an important role in generating interest in the sequel.

The early performance of “Awarapan 2” also demonstrates the continuing commercial potential of sequels built around films that acquired cult status after their original release, particularly when they retain a strong emotional association with their lead actors.
