Fraudsters Send Phishing Emails to Russians Posing as Tax Authorities

Fraudsters in Russia are sending phishing emails to citizens while posing as tax authorities, according to TASS, citing Masharov, a member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation.

The messages typically claim that recipients have unpaid taxes or outstanding debts, have failed to submit required documents, or need to file a tax declaration or provide additional explanations.

Recipients are then encouraged to follow a link for more detailed information. According to the warning, opening the link can trigger malicious software on the user’s device.

Such phishing schemes exploit the credibility of government institutions and the sensitive nature of tax-related issues in an attempt to pressure recipients into responding quickly.

Citizens have been advised not to open suspicious links contained in tax-related emails or messages and to verify any tax obligations only through official channels.
