China Reiterates Position That Taiwan Has Never Been and Will Never Be a Country

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday that Taiwan has never been a country and will never become one, accusing the Lai Ching-te authorities of deliberately distorting UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to advance what Beijing describes as a “Taiwan independence” separatist agenda.
Mao made the remarks at a regular press briefing in Beijing in response to a question about Lai’s assertion that China was misrepresenting Resolution 2758 and that Taiwan is a “sovereign independent nation.”
According to Mao, statements by the Lai authorities cannot alter what Beijing regards as the historical and legal fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China. She also said such rhetoric would not undermine the international community’s adherence to the one-China principle.
Mao said UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 reaffirmed the one-China principle by restoring all rights of the People’s Republic of China at the United Nations and recognizing representatives of its government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the organization.
She said China’s position is that, from political, legal and procedural perspectives, Resolution 2758 settled the question of the representation of China at the United Nations, including Taiwan. Mao stressed that there is only one seat representing China at the UN and rejected any concept of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.”
Beijing regards the Taiwan question as an issue concerning China’s core interests and maintains that the one-China principle is the political foundation for countries establishing and maintaining diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.
