Jamtang Builds Highland Tomato Brand to Drive Rural Prosperity

A tasting and brand-promotion event for highland tomatoes was successfully held in Jamtang County, Sichuan Province, on September 3, marking another step in the county’s efforts to strengthen agriculture and animal husbandry as engines of local development.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to move Jamtang’s highland tomato industry away from scattered cultivation and weak branding toward standardized production, stronger brand identity and market-oriented development. Local authorities see the sector as a new source of momentum for rural revitalization.

Jamtang’s tomatoes benefit from the area’s clean high-altitude environment, abundant sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night. These natural conditions help produce tomatoes with higher sweetness, strong flavour and good overall quality.

With support from east-west cooperation between Zhejiang and Sichuan and technical assistance from the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Jamtang introduced and selected a new variety known as “Wenranghong No. 1,” which is suited to plateau conditions.

The new variety is described as cold-resistant, relatively large in size, high in sweetness, strong in disease resistance and rich in lycopene. These characteristics make it suitable for larger-scale cultivation in highland areas and help address previous limitations in plateau vegetable production.

At present, a major planting base in Jamtang produces around 50,000 jin, or about 25 tonnes, of tomatoes annually. The project is expected to increase the village collective economy by more than 250,000 yuan a year, while also helping raise local incomes and strengthen links between agricultural development and community prosperity.

Jamtang plans to further expand cultivation of the new variety, improve standardized farming practices and strengthen brand management. Authorities also aim to deepen east-west agricultural cooperation and build a more complete industrial chain linking cultivation, production and sales.

By combining highland ecological advantages with modern agricultural technology, scientific research and market development, Jamtang is seeking to turn its distinctive agricultural products into a stronger economic foundation for rural revitalization and shared prosperity.
