Putin to Visit India for 18th BRICS Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a working visit to India from September 11 to 13 to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of BRICS.
On September 11, the first day of the visit, President Putin will address the plenary session of the annual BRICS Business Forum. Traditionally held ahead of the summit, the forum serves as an important platform for dialogue among business communities from BRICS countries and for promoting investment and economic cooperation.
On the same day, Putin will hold a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders are also scheduled to visit the Innoprom exhibition, organised jointly by the industry and trade ministries of Russia and India.
The main programme of the BRICS Summit will begin on September 12. Leaders of BRICS member states will discuss initiatives put forward under India’s chairship, the future direction of the grouping, and ways to further strengthen cooperation in politics and security, economics and finance, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties.
The leaders will also exchange views on current international and regional issues. The strategic partnership within the expanding BRICS framework, a multipolar world order, development finance, trade, energy, technology and South-South cooperation are expected to feature prominently in the discussions.
On September 13, an expanded BRICS meeting will bring together heads of delegations from member and partner countries, invited states and heads of international organisations.
The key agreements and decisions reached during the summit are expected to be reflected in the final document. During his stay in New Delhi, President Putin is also scheduled to hold a number of bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries.
Putin’s visit to India is considered significant both for Russia-India strategic relations and for cooperation within BRICS. Energy, industry, trade, technology and multilateral diplomacy are expected to remain among the key areas of discussion aimed at further expanding cooperation between the two countries.
