Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of Jilin University. Xi, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, extended warm congratulations to the university’s faculty, students and alumni at home and abroad.
Located in Changchun, Jilin Province, Jilin University was founded in 1946. The university is celebrating September 16, 2026, as the 80th anniversary of its establishment. Administered by China’s Ministry of Education, it is a key national comprehensive university and is among the institutions included in China’s “Project 211,” “Project 985” and the first group of “Double First-Class” universities.
Over the past eight decades, the university has developed a broad academic and research structure covering science, technology, medicine, humanities, social sciences, engineering, agriculture and interdisciplinary studies. It has trained a large number of skilled professionals for China’s development while also making important contributions to scientific research and technological innovation.
The university has described its 80th anniversary as an opportunity to review its historical achievements and begin a new stage of development. Various academic, research and alumni-related programmes are being organised to mark the occasion. President Xi’s congratulatory letter is being regarded as high-level recognition of the university’s eight-decade academic journey.
