Aba Advances ‘Highland Granary’ Initiative, Improving Barley Production and Quality

Aba County in China’s highland region has in recent years made the development of a “Highland Granary” a key agricultural objective. The initiative focuses on building high-standard farmland, protecting cultivated land, promoting scientific farming techniques and expanding the cultivation of high-quality barley.

Local authorities have continued to strengthen the protection and quality of productive farmland while strictly safeguarding designated cultivated-land limits. Farmers are also receiving scientific and technical training, while the use of improved barley varieties and better field management practices is being encouraged.

These measures have helped steadily improve both barley yields and quality in Aba. The use of modern agricultural machinery has also expanded across harvesting, collection and transportation, reducing labour requirements and improving the efficiency of agricultural production.

By combining farmland protection, scientific training, quality seeds and improved field management with farming practices suited to highland conditions, Aba is working to strengthen its food production capacity. The “Highland Granary” initiative is expected to support higher agricultural output while laying a stronger foundation for modern and sustainable agricultural development in the highland region.
