Dong Jun Calls for Global Stability Through Multilateralism at Beijing Xiangshan Forum

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun on Wednesday called for firmly advancing genuine multilateralism to maintain global security and stability, speaking at the opening ceremony of the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum. He urged the international community to safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law.

Dong said the current international environment is marked by growing instability and uncertainty and argued that security challenges cannot be addressed by any single country or a limited group of states alone. He stressed the need to strengthen multilateral dialogue, mutual respect and practical security cooperation while advancing the concept of common security.

The 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum is being held from September 15 to 17 at the Beijing International Convention Center. This year’s theme is “Building Consensus for Stability, Promoting Security Governance Together.” The forum has brought together official delegations from around 100 countries, regions and international organizations, along with senior defense and security officials, military leaders, experts and scholars from around the world.

Discussions at the forum cover the international order and strategic stability, challenges and solutions related to regional conflicts, security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, the role of developing countries, relations among major powers, maritime route security, risks associated with the military application of emerging technologies, and space security.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum. Initially launched as a dialogue platform for scholars and researchers in the security and defense fields, the forum has gradually developed into a high-level security dialogue mechanism involving governments, military leaders, international organizations and experts.

China has presented the forum as an international security dialogue platform based on the principles of equality, openness, inclusiveness and mutual learning. Dong’s remarks conveyed China’s emphasis on the central role of the United Nations, adherence to international law and multilateral cooperation as key foundations for addressing global security challenges.
