Registered Abortions in Russia Fall Nearly Fourfold Over 15 Years

The number of registered abortions in Russia has fallen nearly fourfold over the past 15 years. According to the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, citing data from Rosstat and the Ministry of Health, the number declined from 1.01 million in 2010 to 235,700 last year.

The ratio of abortions to births has also dropped significantly. In 2010, there were 56 abortions for every 100 births, while the latest figure has fallen to 20 abortions per 100 births.

Measured against the number of women of reproductive age, the abortion rate in 2025 stood at 12.4 per 1,000 women. The figures indicate a long-term decline in both the absolute number of registered abortions and their relative rate in Russia.

Since the data refer to officially registered abortions, broader reproductive-health trends should also be assessed alongside factors such as birth rates, the age structure of women, contraceptive use, access to healthcare and the registration system.
