Trump Briefs Japan’s Prime Minister After Meeting Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump called Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and briefed her on the talks. According to Takaichi, the two leaders exchanged views on economic and security issues concerning China and reaffirmed cooperation between Japan and the United States.

Takaichi said in a social media post that the call took place at 9 p.m. She described Trump’s account of the U.S.–China summit as detailed, but did not disclose all the subjects they discussed or identify any new agreement reached during their call.

Takaichi and Trump had met in New York on September 22, ahead of the U.S.–China summit. Japan’s government said they exchanged views on China, including economic security, and agreed to coordinate closely. Takaichi presented the meeting and subsequent phone call within the same week as evidence of the strength of the Japan–U.S. alliance.

Takaichi said Japan and the United States had reaffirmed their commitment to work together for regional and global peace and stability. She also pledged to continue working with Trump to strengthen the alliance.
