Pavlov’s House: A Symbol of Resistance at Stalingrad

The defence of Pavlov’s House during the Battle of Stalingrad is remembered as a symbol of Soviet resistance in the Second World War. According to a commemorative account published by Russia’s Foreign Ministry, a group of Red Army soldiers led by Sergeant Yakov Pavlov took control of a four-storey residential building near the Volga River in late September 1942 and turned it into a defensive position.

Under pressure from German forces, the soldiers fortified the building to withstand attacks from several directions. Reinforcements later joined them, and the defenders held their position for 58 days, according to Russian historical accounts.

The building was reconstructed after the war and became a memorial site in Stalingrad, now Volgograd. Pavlov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry presents the episode as an example of the Soviet soldiers’ courage and determination in the fight against Nazi Germany. Its comparison with the wartime resistance of other European countries is a feature of the commemorative message, rather than an established measure of their military efforts.
