Russia Warns of Strong Retaliation if Kaliningrad Is Attacked

Russia has warned that it would retaliate with all means at its disposal if its western territory of Kaliningrad were subjected to a blockade or military attack. The Russian Embassy in the United Kingdom has made clear that nuclear weapons could also be used if Britain or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) took military action against Russian territory.

Moscow’s response came after British media discussed possible scenarios involving a blockade of Kaliningrad or the withdrawal of recognition of Russian sovereignty over the region. A hypothetical scenario of a Russia-NATO confrontation has also been presented in Sky News’ war-game series.

However, there has been no confirmed formal NATO decision to blockade or attack Kaliningrad. Russia has reiterated that it does not seek war with NATO or Europe and has no intention of attacking them.

Located on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, Kaliningrad is a strategically important region for Russia. It is home to a major base of Russia’s Baltic Fleet.

Moscow has said its message is focused on deterrence, making clear that any military action against Russian territory would face a serious response. At the same time, Russia has reiterated the need for dialogue and strategic stability to prevent a direct Russia-NATO confrontation.
