China Launches Frontier Science Programme with Ten Initial Projects

China has launched a research programme aimed at making original discoveries at the frontiers of science. Led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, its first phase comprises ten projects covering subjects from the synthesis of new elements to the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

The projects also include microscopic measurements of chemical bonds and the creation of synthetic cells. The programme is designed to give researchers more room to test new ideas without having to promise specific results in advance. Its proposed evaluation methods place less weight on publication counts and short-term outcomes, while recognising that unsuccessful experiments can also advance knowledge.

China’s Ministry of Science and Technology has separately outlined research priorities for the 15th Five-Year Plan, covering 2026 to 2030. Alongside fundamental science, they include artificial intelligence, quantum technology, biomanufacturing, integrated circuits and research into the deep sea, space and the Earth’s interior. The ministry said central government support for basic research would continue to increase.

Official figures put China’s research and development spending at more than 3.92 trillion yuan in 2025. China also entered the top ten of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index for the first time that year. The new programme reflects an ambition to build on the scale of that investment through more original scientific work.

Frontier research can take years to produce results, and success cannot be guaranteed for every project. Sustained funding, freedom for researchers to explore uncertain ideas and the ability to connect discoveries with industry will be key tests of the programme’s impact.
