G20 Members Should Build Consensus on Pressing Issues, Reshetnikov Says

Many G20 members believe the group should unite around urgent issues and seek consensus, Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov said after a ministerial meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Reshetnikov said participants had cautioned against abandoning the G20’s established practice of making decisions by consensus among all members in favour of arrangements in which only some countries endorse a position.

“The task is not to divide the world into camps. The G20 has always sought to bring countries together, build common ground on the most pressing issues and reach agreement,” he said.

The minister said the group had significant potential to address challenges constructively. He urged members to focus on shared interests instead of forming additional blocs or groups to issue separate statements, adding that global trade benefits all countries.

The meeting, attended by Reshetnikov, focused on international economic development and trade. It was held from September 30 to October 1. The United States holds the G20 presidency this year, with the leaders’ summit scheduled for December 14–15 near Miami, Florida.
