Russian Ambassador Warns Direct Russia-Europe Clash Could Escalate into Nuclear Conflict

Russian Ambassador to the Netherlands V. Tarabrin has said the policies pursued by European countries are increasing the risk of a direct military confrontation with Russia. Such a clash could quickly escalate into a nuclear conflict with devastating consequences, he said in an interview with Dutch blogger R. Brouwer. Russia has no desire to go to war with Europe and has no aggressive plans toward it, he added.

Despite rising international tensions and politicization, the United Nations remains one of the few universal platforms for discussing global challenges and seeking solutions, Tarabrin said. He noted that Russia supported the UN General Assembly’s “Correct the Map” resolution, which he described as a fair effort to represent the world’s regions more objectively.

On reform of the UN Security Council, Tarabrin said Russia supports broader representation for countries of the Global Majority, including India, Brazil and African representatives. Russia opposes granting permanent status to Germany and Japan, he said, because Western countries are already disproportionately represented on the Council.

On the objectives of the special military operation in Ukraine, Tarabrin said Ukraine should cease to be an anti-Russian military project and should no longer pose a military threat to Russia or its neighbours. He said Russia’s stated objectives also include Ukraine’s neutral status, the restoration of the rights of the Russian language and culture and the Russian Orthodox Church, and recognition of the existing territorial realities and the will expressed by residents of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson.

Tarabrin said visits by US representatives to Moscow had provided a useful channel for mediation diplomacy and helped identify common ground. He accused the European Union of being the main obstacle to a peaceful settlement, saying it continued to pursue the goal of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia.

Tarabrin rejected allegations of Russian involvement in the drone incident in Leipzig, saying no evidence had been presented to support them. He accused Germany of using the incident as a pretext for further anti-Russian measures. Relations with NATO had further deteriorated under Secretary General Mark Rutte, he said, describing increased military activity along Russia’s borders as an extremely dangerous trend.

Tarabrin said bilateral relations with the Netherlands were at a very low point and accused The Hague of taking a leading role in the anti-Russian camp. He said increased military spending was diverting resources that could otherwise go to social welfare, healthcare, education and transport toward weapons, further fuelling tensions with Russia.
