Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed satisfaction with the current state and prospects of the partnership between Russia and Turkmenistan, calling for further efforts to strengthen it. He made the remarks at the start of talks with Turkmenistan’s Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Foreign Minister, Rashid Meredov, on October 7. The meeting took place in Turkmenbashi on the sidelines of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Lavrov said each visit gave him new impressions of Turkmenistan’s development. He noted that such visits regularly include productive bilateral and multilateral events. Over the next three days, he said, these would include meetings of CIS foreign ministers, a high-level meeting of the Collective Security Council, and an environmental summit of the five Caspian states.
Lavrov also noted that a series of other events would be held this week in the Avaza National Tourist Zone. He expressed appreciation for close cooperation with Turkmenistan across various forums and said the agreements reached by the two countries’ leaders were important for developing bilateral ties and coordinating their foreign policy efforts.
Lavrov said he hoped the talks would address these matters in detail and identify further steps to help the two foreign ministries play a greater role in achieving the agreed results.
He also congratulated Meredov on the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence, marked on September 27.
