Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to begin a two-day working visit to Turkmenistan on Thursday to attend the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit and the Caspian Environmental Summit. The multilateral events are being held in the Avaza National Tourist Zone on the Caspian coast.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said Putin’s first day on the Caspian coast would be devoted to protocol events related to the arrival of distinguished guests. Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov will host an official reception in their honor, concluding with a fireworks display.

Participants will include Putin and Berdimuhamedov, as well as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

During the visit, Putin will also hold a one-on-one meeting with Berdimuhamedov. The two leaders remain in regular contact, but also use in-person meetings to discuss their respective positions, the Kremlin said.

Putin last visited Turkmenistan nearly a year ago.
