3,860 Suspected Plague Cases Reported by 10 Countries Over Seven Years

Suspected plague cases are reported every year in countries around the world, said Maria Van Kerkhove, director of the World Health Organization’s Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention.

According to the organization’s data, from 2019 to 2025, 10 countries reported 3,860 suspected human plague cases and 423 related deaths. The reports included bubonic and pneumonic plague cases.

Van Kerkhove said plague is caused by a bacterium and can be treated with antibiotics.
