Rahul Gandhi and Opposition Lawmakers Detained at Protest Over Voter-List Revision

Dragon Media News Desk

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and other lawmakers were detained by police in Delhi on Wednesday as protests against India’s voter-list revision intensified. Gandhi was detained for the third time in two days while demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Reuters reported.

More than 130 million names have been removed from voter lists during the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision, according to an Associated Press report. Opposition parties say the process could disenfranchise eligible voters and benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission and the government reject allegations of bias, saying the revision is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries.
