European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union would provide additional funds this week for Ukraine to purchase missiles and drones. She also reaffirmed her full support for Volodymyr Zelensky after U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine needed a new president.
After a phone call with Zelensky, von der Leyen wrote on X that she had expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people. She said Ukraine would be a central focus at this week’s European Council meeting, where leaders would discuss its funding needs for the coming year and ways to mobilize additional international support.
The EU would provide further funding to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and protect its airspace, she said. She also said the bloc would soon open two additional clusters in its accession negotiations with Ukraine.
Trump earlier said Ukraine should replace its president. He said he would advise Ukraine to find “a new leader who can make a deal,” adding that Zelensky could reach an agreement but had not done so.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov earlier said Moscow wanted a comprehensive resolution to the conflict in Ukraine that would lead to a lasting settlement for decades.
