Russian Interior Ministry Outlines Tactics Used by Phone Scammers

Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs told TASS that phone scammers use fear, claims of authority, urgency and promises of financial gain to manipulate people.
Scammers may frighten people by claiming that someone is trying to steal money from their bank account. They may also pretend to be police officers or bank employees to gain trust, then pressure people to make a decision immediately.
In some schemes, victims are told not to discuss the matter with anyone. Scammers may promise a payment or “guaranteed income.” They may also try to make people feel guilty by claiming that their actions could put relatives at risk, the ministry said.
The ministry added that scammers also exploit people’s willingness to help others. This approach is particularly effective when targeting children and teenagers.
