The United States and Israel are preparing to resume a major military operation against Iran before elections in both countries, Axios reported, citing US administration sources.
According to Axios, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the possibility of a new joint operation against Iran last week. Israel’s parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 27, while the US midterm elections will be held on November 3.
Sources told the outlet that the two leaders discussed a possible plan to strike Iran’s military and nuclear targets. Trump said on October 8 that the United States would not attack Iran before the US midterm elections. However, Axios reported that US and Israeli military forces remain on alert and are preparing to act if the president changes his decision.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and the US Central Command are reportedly among those pressing to resume military action against Iran. Most of Trump’s advisers, however, favour maintaining economic and other forms of pressure on Tehran, the report said. On October 13, Trump said a decision on the next steps regarding Iran would be made soon.
According to TASS, the United States and Israel began the war against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran reached an understanding on an immediate ceasefire on all fronts. However, on the night of July 8, the United States resumed large-scale strikes against Iran, accusing it of violating the agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz. The US administration later signalled that it would halt the use of large-scale military force and increase pressure on Iran through sanctions.
