Belgian Ambassador Summoned to Russian Foreign Ministry

Belgian Ambassador to Russia Michel Gerebtzoff was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 13, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, Russia objected to statements by Belgium’s military and political leaders alleging that Russia was increasing hybrid and sabotage threats and posing a direct military threat to Belgium and Europe. Moscow described the allegations as unfounded.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said aggressive remarks by some Belgian officials portrayed Russia as an enemy and contributed to rising tensions. It warned that such statements could increase the risk of a confrontation spiralling out of control and urged Belgium to consider their consequences and restrain its anti-Russian rhetoric.
