Twenty-five children who were being taken to Dehradun, India, to study Tibetan were returned from the Nepal-India border in Kanchanpur on Thursday. Indian border security personnel questioned them at a checkpoint in Banbasa and handed them over to Nepal Police.
According to the Kanchanpur District Police Office, the children are from Sera in Simkot Rural Municipality-8, Humla, and are all under 10 years old. Local resident Panchabir Budha of Humla was taking them to India through the Gaddachauki crossing. The children are now under the protection of Kanchanpur police.
It remains unclear whether their parents had consented to the trip. Police said the case is under investigation.
