Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been re-elected. After all votes were counted, the country’s electoral court declared Lula the winner, saying he received about 4.4 million more votes than his rival, Flávio Bolsonaro. Lula has secured a fourth, non-consecutive term as president.

Lula is a vocal critic of U.S. President Donald Trump. His victory has been seen as a challenge to growing U.S. influence in Latin America and to the recent electoral gains of right-wing leaders aligned with Trump. With Lula’s win, left-leaning leaders will remain in power in both Brazil and Mexico, Latin America’s two most populous countries.

The voting period was extended by two hours during the final stage of the election, prompting disputes at some polling stations. The electoral process concluded after the count was completed.

Lula began his political career as a labor leader and was previously jailed in corruption cases. The courts later dismissed the cases against him. He first returned to the presidency in 2022 for a third term.

During the campaign, Lula pledged to protect the Amazon rainforest and continue Bolsa Família, a welfare program for low-income families. He also repeatedly warned the United States against interfering in Brazil’s domestic election.
