China’s 15-year-old Chang Mohan won gold in the women’s 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly within about an hour on the final day of swimming at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Chang, one of China’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony, finished the competition with two golds and two silvers.
Chang clocked 1:59.59 in the 200m freestyle and 2:09.93 in the 200m butterfly. Her victories helped China finish the swimming programme with seven medals: four golds and three silvers. Teammate Xie Yichen also contributed to China’s medal tally.
Chang said she had developed a fever and diarrhoea the day before the finals. She tried to regain her form because she did not want to end the final day with regrets. Although she felt she could have performed better in her earlier events, she described the meet as memorable.
In the men’s events, Russia’s Bogdan Toropkin won the 200m freestyle in 1:47.78. Egypt’s Zain Ali took gold in the 200m butterfly in 1:57.88, securing his third title of the competition after victories in the 50m and 100m butterfly.
Chang said she plans to compete at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Beijing in early December, before joining a winter training camp as she prepares for the Los Angeles Olympics.
