Fraudsters Active on Eve of Victory Day, War Veterans Targeted

Moscow. On the eve of Victory Day, fraudsters in Russia are increasingly targeting elderly veterans of the Great Patriotic War. According to the Committee of Families of Fatherland Warriors, scammers are posing as employees of the Social Fund or the Ministry of Labour to steal bank card details.

Speaking to Russian news agency TASS, a representative of the committee said, “Fraudsters contact veterans under the pretext of arranging lump-sum payments for Victory Day and ask for confidential bank card information. By pretending to be government officials, they attempt to gain trust.”

In addition, a new scam involving the supposed awarding of medals is rapidly gaining momentum. Under this scheme, fraudsters send veterans a link, and upon clicking it, their personal data is stolen. The committee warned that victims often fall into the trap without even realising it.
