US-Iran Tensions Escalate in Strait of Hormuz, Oil Markets in Turmoil

Strait of Hormuz. Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply intensified in the Strait of Hormuz, regarded as the world’s most critical oil supply route. The regional security situation has become extremely sensitive after the US military claimed to have targeted and “disabled” an Iranian oil tanker.
According to the US, the action was a retaliatory measure following attempted Iranian drone and missile strikes, which impacted Iranian military infrastructure and vessels. Iran, however, has lodged a strong protest, calling the US action a ceasefire violation and accusing Washington of abandoning diplomacy in favour of a military option.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates has also confirmed drone and missile attacks within its territory, in which some injuries have been reported. With the rising tensions, instability has resurfaced in international oil markets, and the global community has expressed concern that the situation could spiral out of control.
